How to Do Make-up for a Rhythmic Gymnastics Performance

A beautiful performance in rhythmic gymnastics isn’t only about skills and dance — the gymnast’s look matters too. Make-up highlights facial expressions, adds confidence and completes the costume.

Do You Need a Professional Make-up Artist?

Not really. Often the gymnast or her mum knows best which look matches the costume and routine. Make sure the make-up fits the child’s age, outfit and theme.

What to Pack in the Make-up Bag

Foundation — lightweight, skin-tone matching, no mask effect.
Powder — transparent is best for fixing.
Concealer — for small imperfections.
Eyeshadows — colours to match the leotard. Long-lasting cream shadows work well.
Eyeliner — waterproof, pen-type is easiest.
Mascara — must be waterproof.
Blush — peachy or golden for freshness.
Lipstick or liner — bold colour for a winning smile. Pick a non-smudging formula.

Key Tips

  • Make-up must be comfortable — the gymnast shouldn’t feel overdone.

  • It must last — through warm-ups, performance and award ceremony.

  • Should look natural and age-appropriate.

  • Hypoallergenic, safe products are always a plus.

Step-by-step Make-up

1. Base — apply foundation evenly with a sponge or brush. Use concealer if needed.

2. Eyeliner — draw neat lines with a pen liner.

3. Eyeshadows — darker shade in the crease, lighter or colourful on the lid. Highlight the inner corners.

4. Face shaping — fix with powder, add blush on cheeks, blend well, smooth the neck area too.

5. Mascara & finish — apply mascara from roots to tips. Optionally, use highlighter or make-up fixer.

6. Lips — final touch. If you want a bright smile, use a lip pencil for intensity.
